The Freedom History Project is a historical archive covering liberation movements, freedom fighters, and anti-colonial struggles across five continents and two centuries. Historical record is, by its nature, incomplete, contested, and subject to ongoing revision. Events that appear settled in popular understanding are frequently disputed among historians. Sources disagree. Archives are incomplete. Eyewitness accounts contradict each other. Official records were destroyed, falsified, or never kept.
This archive represents our best attempt to produce accurate, fair, and well-sourced accounts of the individuals and movements documented here. It is not infallible. It contains errors. Some of those errors are known to us and are being corrected. Others are not yet known to us. If you identify an error, please use the contact form to bring it to our attention.
2. Contested History
Many of the events, movements, and individuals documented in this archive are subjects of active historical and political controversy. The archive makes interpretive choices — about which accounts to credit, which framings to use, which aspects of a person's legacy to emphasise — and those choices reflect the project's editorial perspective. We do not claim to be neutral. No historical archive is neutral.
Where historical interpretation is actively contested — where credible scholars hold substantially different views — we endeavour to acknowledge the contestation rather than selecting one account and presenting it as settled. Where we have failed to do this adequately, we welcome corrections.
